Greater awareness of the need for early detection of symptoms related to the development of breast cancer has led to a resurgence of interest in infrared thermal imaging, also known as thermography.
Thermography’s key asset is that it has been shown to be extremely useful in the detection of pre-cancerous activities in the breast. Resources indicate, that most cancers are detected by mammography when the tumor is approximately
Breast Thermography is an imaging technology that utilizes advanced computerized infrared camera systems to detect heat patterns in the breast. Chemical and blood vessel activity in the area of a developing breast cancer is almost always higher than in a normal breast. When a cancer is forming, it develops its own blood supply in order to feed its accelerated growth (a process known as malignant angiogenesis). More importantly, pre-cancerous tissues can start this process well in advance of the cells becoming malignant. Thermography measures the skin’s autonomic response to
that inflammation – it’s heat signature.
Breast Thermography is a safe, pain-free, and radiation-free procedure that is appropriate for women of all ages. It is FDA Approved as an adjunct diagnostic breast cancer screening procedure. A typical office visit takes approx 30 minutes. Once the images are taken, a group of doctors who are Board Certified Clinical Thermologists interpret and report their findings. These reports, including a complete set of images, are available to the patient within 3-5 days. All interpretations and images are archived for comparative studies of subsequent scans.
Currently, no single screening procedure can detect 100% of all breast cancers. Thermography is designed to be used with mammography and not as a replacement. Studies show that when thermography is added to a women’s regular breast health program (physical examination + mammography + thermography), 95% of all early stage cancers will be detected. This would give the vast majority of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer the reality of returning to a normal healthy life.
